Household Consumption Pattern in the Context of China’s Demographic Transition: 2010 — 2014

Liangliang Sun , Asian Demographic Research Institute

China has been experiencing rapid demographic transition in recent decades. Population aging, urbanization, household shrinking, and the improvement of education level are all changing the household characteristics, which is highly likely to reshape the overall household consumption pattern and change the carbon emission from indirect energy consumption in the future. By using two waves of data from a nationwide microscopic follow-up survey and generalized linear mix model, this study tries to explore “whether there are some stable relationships between household demographic characteristics and consumption structure in different regions and areas of China” and “what are the most important contributors to the change in consumption structure from 2010 to 2014 among all the household demographic characteristics”.
